In a world that offers a dizzying array of amusements and entertainments, there is none quite so enduring or so universal as the circus. Now, over the course of six dramatic and mesmerizing hours, Show of Force will take us away to the circus – not just under the big top, but far beyond it: into what circus folk call “the backyard,” the place where the trailers are parked and the real heart of the circus beats. With unprecedented access granted by the Big Apple Circus, the filmmaking team will follow this traveling company over the course of an entire season, and immerse viewers in a rich collection of human stories, simultaneously compelling our fascination, and appealing to our shared humanity.

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a thousand miles from nowhere, a floating city rises above the sea. Seven stories high, three football fields long, carrying 5,000 sailors and marines and 60 military aircraft – this is the USS Nimitz.
From May to November, 2005, our four camera crews filmed nearly 2000 hours of footage on board the Nimitz as it deployed to the Persian Gulf. The result is an unprecedented 10-hour television series shot in stunning high definition video. There has never been a more intimate and revealing look into life in the Navy.
As Captain Ted Branch says, “the heart and soul of a ship is not made of steel – it’s the crew.” This is not the story of a ship – it’s the story of shipmates. The series closely follows a core group of characters, from the Admiral of the fleet to the elite fighter pilots to the lowliest scrubs. Through close observation of their lives over the course of six months, the series addresses larger themes, such as family, faith, discipline, patriotism, love and war, and the rites of passage.
The series not only reveals who is out there fighting to defend the United States but also examines the Navy’s role in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In a conventional war, the Navy’s mighty arsenal can bring to bear overwhelming force of a target. But the War of Terror is a different kind of war. The Iraqi insurgents are elusive and can easily blend in with friendly non-combatants. To stay in the game, the Navy must figure out a way to adapt its strike force to be effective at waging this new “fourth generation” warfare.
